This amp was the worst basketcase ever!!!!!!!!! Total hack mods, even by my standards, and literally!! The cabinet was hacked off just below the line of the trannys and output tubes.....no speakers, instead a piece of ply wood.....yay!!! No reverb tank, of course, either. Chassis suspended by a bolt with about 15 washers and a rusty nut, the beauty ring from the pilot jewel and a couple washers used to prevent the afforementioned bolt from falling thru the roof of the wasted cab up topside. At least the former owner had the good sense to take out the master volume circuit!!! Now, if they hadn't used plumbing solder........Egads, what a mess!! But wait, there's more!!!! A mismatched pair of Sovtek 5881's on one side, some barely alive RCA blackplate 6L6GC's on the other. Preamp tubes with huge white question marks painted on them with what looks to be white out. Ya know I had to open the bitch up and see what she could do!! But , being the true paranoic I am, first I had to crack the thing open, which was no mean feat in itself!!! Finally me and my bud C. figured out we gotta remove it's new plywood derriere which was forcing the sad remains of the grille cloth/baffleboard practically thru the poor trapped chassis. This freed the amp so I could apply some judicious voltage measurements.......surprise! Everything was reading......well, GOOD!! Some sloppy ass work inside that'd have to be redone, and a date of '72 stamped inside with somebodies name, Alexander something or other. A quick inspection revealed NO TRACE of any CBS inspired improvements! THAT was refreshing, all that crud as you know totally eats any tone the amp may have had. So, I checked it out visually, shorted the vibrato jack so I could see if it worked, and, yes, surprisingly well in fact seeing as how two of the optocoupler leads were shorting each other, at least it looked that way. Intrigued, I had the shops lackey,(awwwwwww, I'm just messin witcha ,Son!!!! You KNOWS yo daddy love U, boy! now get back to work!!! Besides, it's funnier this way!!)J., go grab me a modern Fender so I could spank a plank thru the reverb tank, which I temporarily stole to test the 'verb circuit further. And , DAMN, SKIPPY!!!!!!!! The verb had survived , too. So , me and C., looked at this poor aborted wonder and scratched our heads in abjectivity. Neither of us could believe how shitty this piece of crap was!!!!! So of course, with me bitching profoundly about every reason the guy who took this thing in should be banned from any facet of the music industry, and every thing wrong with this abused gem, a moot point was arrived at after the short haggle. We agreed on a very good price, I threw some bread onnit and reassembled it into it's sad housing. But, Once paid off, it'll be restored to at least a semblance of the glory she was intended to once have. Thanks to the tube guru I've already got the missing parts ordered, and may even invest in a replica/reissue cabinet (In Fact, Mike hooked me up with an original Quad Reverb cabinet for $25.!!!). The cosmetics are actually reasonably decent on the chassis, and frankly, she sounds surprisingly good!! Kind of a Cinderella story , but with a Fender Quad (missing)Reverb. Nope! No reason for the story, maybe the moral @the end...or was that the beginning? $150.00 out the door, the bottom line. About $35 bux for missing parts, $42.00 more to cap her, and who knows how much to refurbish her with a cabinet. The satisfaction of resurecting, salvaging , restoring and getting another old Fender that bloody cheap? PRICELESS............. peace,(LOL) JimiNo, that AIN'T the amp!! That's what it's suPOSED to look like!!!!!!!!
