Bahamakin69: yes indeed
jimipocius: i was born a poor black child in the wilderness of willimantic....

you'll be a rock star
jimipocius: heh heh uh huh...he said burn out, beavis...heh heh...uh huh huhu...heh
moi?
already a dime store rock star, right?
Bahamakin69: When Did you First Start Playing Music
jimipocius: here we go.....when i was 7, i started playing cello, and futzing around with guitars.
got my first electric when i was 12.
Bahamakin69: great
what was the first song you learned
jimipocius: learned the classical trip as a bassist in hi school, too. got awards and shit.
my first song i learned?
tough question, it all kinda came at once when the floodgates opened.....
the first 3 were roundabout by yes, rocky mtn way by joe walsh, and my sister Marci taught me the needle and the damage done by neil young.
them and a bunch of kiss and alice cooper songs.
guess that's my roots.....
Bahamakin69: awesome indeed
jimipocius: well, that and blues...
Bahamakin69: ok
did you play any mini shows for your friends
jimipocius: learned my first proper blues scale from freddie king the day of his last show at the shaboo.
oh, yah, was hard to avoid my friends hearing...i was evil and had a monster amp!
Bahamakin69: thumbs up! are the blues still your foundation
jimipocius: yeh, pretty much, the blues are always there somewhere ineverything i do, every breath i take man.
Bahamakin69: great! what blues songs influenced you?
jimipocius: there are so many.......it'd be alot easier to name artists than individual songs.....big joe turner, of course muddy, freddie king, bb, rob johnson, son house....ya know, all of 'em! but some of the big influences on me personally were more those that interpreted the blues in a rock context...hendrix, alvin lee, page, guys like that. i really can't stand guys like gary moore tho. he should stick to rock and stop destroying the idiom with caucasian cliches......did i just say that?
Bahamakin69: What Bands we're you in before Smokin Herb (The Band)
jimipocius: my 1st real band was called woodfoot, back about 77 or so...from there i played with so many cats it's hard to remember them all!
some of the others were rockledge, horsefull carriage, intruder, pink salami grinder, aftershock, nasty axe, blue noise, the jimjamms, franklin, and i done a few shows with sweet daddy cool breeze, despite the fact me and wall are like fire and water.
Bahamakin69: awesome
did you record the jams?
jimipocius: alot of them were recorded and lost over the years.....i'm not too anal about it, maybe i should be, but music is such a transient thing that i don't worry about recording it too much. i mean the best shit just kinda blows thru ya , ya know? it'd be nice to hear some of the stuff, but i don't even remember who has most of the stuff from the old days, ya know?
Bahamakin69: ok well said
jimipocius: don't know how else to answer !
Bahamakin69: when did Black Sabbath Come Into The Picture
jimipocius: when i heard black sabbath by black sabbath, that was when i decided rock and roll was cool!
before that i hated rock, believe it or not. sabbath isn't much of a musical influence of mine, but they were the beginning of this long strange trip.
Bahamakin69: ok
Bahamakin69: When Did Smokin Herb Begin To Happen
jimipocius: as far as sabbath goes, without them, rock would never have become what it is today.
Bahamakin69: yes ok
jimipocius: smokin herb was started back just before halloween of 2000 to cover my friend Butterball's ass when he had a last minute cancellation.
me and peet reiley started it as a continuation -sort of- of the jimjamms.
Bahamakin69: awesome beginings for sure , Tell Me Some Highlights
jimipocius: wellllll.hang on gotta grab a smoke...
Bahamakin69: yupper
jimipocius: well, i tried to pull oneof my bands to gether to play, and everybody was workin.
Bahamakin69: The Smokin Herb Story Un-Cut
jimipocius: i knew peet for a while ,and knew he had a good pa,and a truck, and he'd been raving about this bassist, herb lester.
and i had a drummer..in fact, originally i called rick, our current drummer, and couldn't get a hold of him. so i called dave bertok, a bassist with a defunct band i'd checked out the summer before.
killer drummer..best i ever seen.
so we met up at the primary in portland. herb was smokin' the most disgusting foul smelling cigars i'd ever had the misfortune to smell.......really gross...could hardly sing!
anyways, we hit expecting to just get thru the nite, get paid and get the hell outta dodge.but something unexpected happened....
we clicked musically/psychically instantaneously.
was kinda scary how tite we were out of the chute.
we ended up playing 50 some odd songs that nite off the cuff.
bikers loved it.
Bahamakin69: vrrrrooooooooooooom Vrrrrrrroooooommmmmmm
jimipocius: but we needed a name...so while outside during break i came up with the name smokin herb and the weednap to goof on herb.
the bikers loved it, and the name stuck.
Bahamakin69: ohhh i see
jimipocius: actually got nothing to do with weed, believe it or not.
hah hah.
Bahamakin69: Awesome To Know Now, The Facts
jimipocius: wink!
Bahamakin69: What Tunes Did you Play together
Bahamakin69: yahoo does it again folks
Bahamakin69: Jimi Will Be Acheiving A Slight Return
Yahoo! Messenger: jimipocius has logged back in. (7/12/2003 9:48 AM)
Bahamakin69: Continued
jimipocius: sorry, got bounced off1
Bahamakin69: Your In Now! lmao
Bahamakin69: Meanwhile Back At the Mouse
jimipocius: so, where were we?
Bahamakin69: What Tunes Did Smokin Herb Play From The Inception
jimipocius: bahamakin69 (7/12/03 9:47:57 AM): What Tunes Did you Play together
jimipocius: well, we played a bunch of hendrix and zep, and a bit of floyd....and whatever we could pull out of our hats.
Bahamakin69: Do You Find That you Found the right Players for your Style?
jimipocius: well.......herb was kinda over thetop, but yah, the band felt like home from the get go.
Bahamakin69: Explain The Proccess
jimipocius: which process?
Bahamakin69: ha aha aha The Birth
jimipocius: oh.......was like, i called pete and a drummer, and peet called herb, and it was a very easy natural delivery!!
we just started playing wherever we could as often as possible.
it's not like we rehearse or anything. no time for it!
the blues again rears it's majestic head....how the f&$% can ya rehearse how yer gonna feel at any given moment?
screw that, play wht ya feel!
Bahamakin69: Got Cha There!
jimipocius: luckily i found myself in a band that could do just that.
the only rehearsal we'd do would be listening to something in a car while gettin baked....that's about it.
we did rehearse some originals, once.
Bahamakin69: The Baby Started Kickin?
jimipocius: haven't been able to again. no time!
baby was born fully functional!!lmfao!
Bahamakin69: What Guitars & Amplifiers Do You All Use
jimipocius: 90% of the time, me and peet play strats, but we both sling gibsons, too. we both have sg's, and peet has the sweetest les paul......it's like solid mahogany or something, real unusual for a custom. gibson says they never made it!
Bahamakin69: I've Seen It!
jimipocius: i sling oddball axes, too...jay tursers, homemaded monstrosities...
nice axe, huh?
Bahamakin69: ohhhhhh yes
jimipocius: for amps, i usually use marshalls for rock and fenders foer everything else. peet plays fenders with marshall preamps.
Bahamakin69: Great Stuff...Do You Have Any Unusual Stylings
jimipocius: dean plays carvin amps and guitars, occaisionally pedullas or rickenbackers
well, we just rock the snots outta everything!!lol
Bahamakin69: That Seems To Work Just Fine
jimipocius: that's not entirely true...but our stylings change depending upon our collective mood...sometimes heavier, sometimes lighter
Bahamakin69: Describe The Smokin Herb Sound
jimipocius: ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
ummmmmmmmmmm
classic hard rock of the late 60's-early 70's mostly, with the occaisional curve ball.....like, we love mutilating country music by doing it toooooooo authentically!
Bahamakin69: Metal Country hum
jimipocius: when ya go from the immigrant song to long hair country boy, well.....it can surprise some folks!
Bahamakin69: People Want all Kinds Of Moody Music
Do you Write Many Originals?
jimipocius: we do that...and usually give em a bunch of floyd every show. they love it!
i have several hundred originals, but i don't bother much with them anymore. when i was with avatar back in the early 90's originally all we did was originals. we even made some cake, surprisingly.
Bahamakin69: What Was The Highlight's Of The Worst & Best Gig you Ever Played So Far?
jimipocius: signing boobies at butterballs was fun....and that timeless feel ya get on stage where ya can play with the elasticity of time is a gas, too.
the worst?
Bahamakin69: indeed
jimipocius: livin on a purple school bus living on 3 for a buck hotdogs and free popcorn and shit from the bars we played.
that sucked most heinously!
Bahamakin69: hum righto
jimipocius: but i suppose in retrospect, it's all been good in it's way. no complaints here, mate!
Bahamakin69: Where Is Smokin Herb Heading In The Club Sufferage Circit
jimipocius: towards more suffering!!!
Bahamakin69: Where There's Pain There's Playback
jimipocius: i dunno, seriously. i'm 41, gotta trashed body and have been playing rock n roll since like 69 od so, so i'm pretty much just happy to play my music ya know?
Bahamakin69: Describe The Ultimate How do You Like Us Now Sceanerio
jimipocius: i gave up on the wanna be a star thing along time ago. just wanna play good old fashioned rock nroll now.
Bahamakin69: Love The honesty
jimipocius: thanks, what do i got to lie about?
it's all good...
Bahamakin69: Do you Have A Goal With Smokin Herb?
jimipocius: the ultimate huh?
too play rock n roll till the good mother calls me home.
Bahamakin69: Farout
jimipocius: heh heh
Bahamakin69: Your a Real Musician for Sure!
Describe First Meeting Bahama Kin
jimipocius: it's in me, and it's gonna come out, ya know?
so me and the boys drive way out to t town to play dawns getaway......there's like 6 folk in the bar counting us!!
of course, they can't pay us, and cut a deal. we were supposed to do 1 set.
but we gave the few folk there the whole show anyway, cuz the y were into it.
Bahamakin69: It Blew Me Away
And
jimipocius: BK was there, asked if he could film us....that's how i met cha bro!
Bahamakin69: I Still Have The Film
jimipocius: i hope to see it someday!!
Bahamakin69: Absolutly
jimipocius: we musta suuuuuuuuucked!
Bahamakin69: Naaaaaaa
The Pay Did
jimipocius: that was just before we let herb go
yah, the pay did!
but the PAYBACK was worth it!
Bahamakin69: ok next
jimipocius: we ain't in this just for the bread...
Bahamakin69: Where Do you Wanna Play
Toads Place?
jimipocius: everywhere!!like duhbya's impeachment.... just kidding!!
(evil grin)
Bahamakin69: Smiles Back With That Ozzy Shuffle
jimipocius: i dunno if toads would hire us.
Bahamakin69: We Will See
jimipocius: alot of places don't hire folks if they're not local with a huge following....
sad, but true.
Bahamakin69: Yes But Folks Love A Band That Is Real And Not All A Gimmic Ya Know?
jimipocius: hartford, everywhere is like that...or they want ya to play for peanuts.
Bahamakin69: It's Alive In Smokin Herb
jimipocius: yah, but before they can love ya, they gotta be able to know who ya are!!
thanks man, yah, i like SH...
Bahamakin69: Get Them Demo's In
Who's Your Hero
jimipocius: good band........best i ever played with despite it's quirks....
my hero personally?
leo fender.
Bahamakin69: yup
or frank zappa.
or roger waters
or mostly,
john winston lennon.
Bahamakin69: Cool & Sweet
Do You Do Lennon Material?
jimipocius: on occaision we have done cold turkey, but mostly we just do his beatles stuff. i kinda got a few by him i'd like to do.....like i'm losing you, gimme some truth, stuff like that.
Bahamakin69: What Should Club Owners & Audience Do For Bands That Work Hard To Get to Play For The People They Love?
jimipocius: SUPPORT THEM!! SUPPORT ALL MUSICIANS!!!
Bahamakin69: Both Thumbs Up!
jimipocius: particularly your local ones....i've heard some real diamonds in some real shitholes...
Bahamakin69: Is Jimi Hendrix Alive in today's Music?
jimipocius: yeah in some ways. but alot of modern music is kinda lacking soul and originality, ya know?
Bahamakin69: I Can Relate to that
jimipocius: but jimi's influence comes thru everyday

http://smokinherbband.bravepages.com/welcome/bio/peet/index.html

Bahamakin69: Whats The Bond Musically With Peet R.
jimipocius: just listen to any guitarist that plays rock today
me and peet are good foils to each other..i'm a 4 on the floor rocker, and he's more of a dead school guy.the tensions between our bags can really stimulate us to higher places.plus peet is an all around good dude!
been my partner in crime for a while now.
and he can think on his feet, should i pull something outta my hat he don't know......which is important!!
plus, he looks like bob laramie's twin...what can ya say?
Bahamakin69: yes i see that
jimipocius: too bad he don't play BASS like that- but he's a good gtr and vox.
solid
Bahamakin69: Bob Is great as well I Filmed him too With Chris Tofield's Bluesbender...Great Show...So
jimipocius: yah, and tofield ain't no slouch either1
Bahamakin69: What Should Young guitar Players Do To Improve Their approach towards that Limelight
jimipocius: i swear that mofo turned black before my eyes once when he was testifyin'
young players should just be tenacious, and hold their vision dear. eventually, ya get what ya need!!
Bahamakin69: All Natural Right?
jimipocius: play every damn gig ya can play, every style, even if listening to it would make ya barf...just PLAY IT!!!
natural is good...if ya concentrate on makin' bread, you'll never be happy. and beware of drugs,,, don't let them and all the other shit run your life, put the music first and you'll eventually find your niche
Bahamakin69: Thanks Man Thats So So true
jimipocius: trust, that endless party can make ya old fast....and ya only got one time around, so make the most of it.
partying is cool, and a rite of passage, but dope 'll make ya stagnant if ya put it first
TRUST.
alcohol, more so than reefer.
Bahamakin69: Whats Your Favorite Local Bands
jimipocius: mine? smokin' herb, the jerks, bluestalkers, alley gators, to name a few.
they're all awesome in their own right.
Bahamakin69: #1
jimipocius: i like to think none are better than another...just different, ya know?
#1?
heh heh....US!!!!!!!!!!!
Bahamakin69: ok I Meant Thumbs Up1
ha aha aha aha
jimipocius: o, ok!
Bahamakin69: Do You Record Much Or Would you like too!
jimipocius: j ust put the music first, ya know?
i've been toying with the idea of making a pc based recording setup........but with 3 kids, it's hard to find the time or ambition.but i'm lookin forward to bringin the boys up to Easton's studio and cutting some tracks.
we have about 12 good originals to start with.
Bahamakin69: Is It Smokin Herb's Wish to Unleash The Music In CD Form
jimipocius: but we rarely play them, and even more rarely live , unless someone asks, cuz most folk don't wanna hear shit they don't know.
yah, eventually, that'd be groovy.
may take a while tho.
Bahamakin69: You'd Be surprized What CD's Will Do For A Band
jimipocius: we gotta 5 song cd of covers we use to book ourselves, but legally ya can't do anything with covers, it's a nitemare i don't care to explore at this point.
Bahamakin69: Yes That was Mine Point
jimipocius: dig it.
i love original music, but there's no bread in it usually, and fewer places to play.
Bahamakin69: ok
Bahamakin69: Any Music Video Ideas?
jimipocius: i applaud all who do it tho, cuz they got balls and put the music first and are willing to do what they gotta do to keep rock and roll alive!
nah.........once upon a time i used to think video......now i 'd rather just let the music do the talking.
Bahamakin69: A Live Band Of Electric Gypsies Cranking the goods To The Great People Who Need Music to Heal Todays wounds?
jimipocius: video can be amazing, or it can suck and be pretentious. music is a visual experince live, for sure, but i think theres something to be said for allowing the listener their own interpretation and/or eyelid movies!!
you got it bro. music can be a driving force in many ways while soothing the tortured spirit.
Bahamakin69: What Has Bahama Kin's "Connecticut Music Online Done for You!
jimipocius: man, u r gonna need a WEBSITE to fit this in, lmfao!!
honestly, bk, you and cmo1 have done so much to further the cause, it's hard to pick a couple facets.
cmo1 is THE premier band site i've surfed!
Bahamakin69: Scratches His Head
jimipocius: ya keep us up to date on wassup, as wella s connecting us with our brothers and sisters in ways ya wouldn't think...like how we're all linking to each other and advertising each other and shit.

jimipocius: smokin herb and all the rest of us owe ya a profound debt of gratitude, man.
NOO popups is also a plus!
Bahamakin69: lmao

Bahamakin69: Now what Have You Enjoyed About The Bands That Have Joined CMO1

jimipocius: me too.....the driving force in my life.
Bahamakin69: I Wanted To Give Bands The chance to Get Extra Notice for Free. Not Always That Gimmi $$$ shit ya Know
jimipocius: i'm one of them cats who try to spread it around....whether giving some kid a strat or something, or booking upcoming bands in venues i play...ya gotta do yer part to keep it alive!
yah, cash is evil like that.
yer heart is in the proper place dude.
Bahamakin69: I Favor No One Band. I'm Like A (Bahama Kin Can't Exist ) entity
jimipocius: what you give comes back to ya!
i hear ya.
but it's cool, cuz thy're ALL good in their own way, dig it!
Bahamakin69: What Should One Say to The Clubs That Want Bands Like yours
jimipocius: hire us!!!
Bahamakin69: How Could Club Owners Improve?
jimipocius: if ya want music, hire us. if ya want bs, hire someone with all the trappings and deny tour clientele some actual music!
well, alot of 'em could start selling pizza......
first and foremost, clubowners need to understand the toil behind a good show,
and the value of good quality entertainment.....
and stop trying to swindle us!
treat us with respect, and they'd be instantly better, ya know?
put the clientele before the (imagined) big bux.
Bahamakin69: Think I'll Work OIn A CMO1fest Featuring All Our Members As a Here We all Are Deed
